Why do lucky people always seem to get all the luck?
Now depending on how you answer that may determine the result actually. If you think you are a lucky person you are more likely to see opportunities available to you and therefore make the most of them.
Whereas, if you think of yourself as an unlucky person you are more likely to overlook opportunities available and miss out on many things therefore creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.
"Luck is believing you're lucky." - Tennessee Williams
Richard Wiseman carried out extensive research to understand this. In this article he explains many of the experiments he conducted and even talks about the 4 basic principles that lucky people tend to adopt. This is one of the experiments:
"I placed advertisements in national newspapers and magazines, asking for people who considered themselves exceptionally lucky or unlucky to contact me. Over the years, 400 extraordinary men and women have volunteered to participate in my research.
I carried out a very simple experiment. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. On average, the unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs whereas the lucky people took just seconds.
Why?
Because the second page of the newspaper contained the message “Stop counting – There are 43 photographs in this newspaper.”
This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was over two inches high. It was staring everyone straight in the face, but the unlucky people tended to miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it.
Just for fun, I placed a second large message half way through the newspaper. This one announced: “Stop counting, tell the experimenter you have seen this and win $250.” Again, the unlucky people missed the opportunity because they were still too busy looking for photographs."
Fascinating eh? We are potentially missing so many opportunities because of the way we think and interact with the world and equally the opposite is true too!
So spend a few minutes thinking about how you think of yourself, are you a lucky person or not? If you think of yourself as an unlucky person, then maybe have a read through Richard's article and see whether you can find moments to change the narrative you are creating for yourself. Then just look at how your luck seems to change.
